ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Mhairi McCann

Mhairi McCann (she/her) is the Founder & CEO of Youth STEM 2030, where she’s on a mission to create the ecosystem of opportunities, support and platforms that empower young people to use STEM to tackle the world’s biggest challenges. To date, the non-profit social enterprise has supported over 1,800 young people in 82+ countries globally, through its programs, Youth STEM Matters (Youth STEM 2030’s global youth-led scientific journal) and Youth STEM Summit (youth-created virtual event). This year, she will launch a third program, Youth STEM Changemakers, which will enable young people - especially marginalized youth - to design meaningful STEM-based solutions to real problems by developing and delivering youth-designed programs focused on finding solutions for the world’s most pressing issues.

Valkyrie Holmes

Valkyrie Holmes has worked in a variety of industries such as healthcare, wildfire suppression, and space tech. She completed an EECS apprenticeship at MIT and a data science internship at NASA's SEES Institute for Earth Science and recently spent the summer working in electrical engineering on the Falcon team at SpaceX. She is taking another gap year from Vanderbilt to work full-time on solving the problem of wildfire mitigation and prevention with the help of the 776 Foundation.

Sophia Kianni

Sophia Kianni is an Iranian-American activist studying climate science and health policy at Stanford University. She is the founder and executive director of Climate Cardinals, an international nonprofit with 9,000 volunteers in 40+ countries working to translate climate information into over 100 languages. She represents the U.S as the youngest member of the inaugural United Nations Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change. She sits on boards and advisory councils for The New York Times, World Economic Forum, Inkey List, Iris Project, JUV Consulting, Ashoka, and American Lung Association.
